"When the servant of the man of God got up and went out early the next morning, an army with horses and chariots had surrounded the city. “Oh no, my lord! What shall we do?” the servant asked.
“Don’t be afraid,” the prophet answered. “Those who are with us are more than those who are with them.”
And Elisha prayed, “Open his eyes, LORD, so that he may see.” Then the LORD opened the servant’s eyes, and he looked and saw the hills full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha." 2 Kings 6:15-17
The commentary I was reading said Elisha prayed for the servant to see the reality of the situation. I thought, how often do I miss the reality? God is working, all the time, around us and we may not see the reality of our situations. In times of great trial we often feel afraid, just like the servant, while God is surrounding us with chariots of fire, to fight for us, against whatever is bearing down on us. I forget to lean on this strength, to take comfort that God is at work, in all things (Romans 8:28). I forget Jesus' promise, "And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age." Matthew 28:20.
Eileen!! Oh my goodness! I seriously read this exact passage YESTERDAY! So cool. I love when scripture keeps coming up in my life. That part of the passage stuck out to me too.
ReplyDeleteAlso, the verse 2 Kings 6:16 (Those who are with us are more than those who are with them.) Made me think of 1 John 4:4 which is "Greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world."
Seriously so amazing! I started reading your blog, and I thought "oh cool Eileen is reading 2 Kings too....wait that's exactly what I just read and was thinking about!" :)
